Making Goals Sustainable

Developing Lifelong Goals

New Years resolutions are frequently discussed each year in my family as a way to motivate ourselves to make changes and develop positive habits. Sometimes these habits last a few days and other times they develop into long lasting, significant changes. It is easy to identify the goal; however, committing ourselves to obtain and sustain the goal is what is challenging. How do we make a permanent or long-term change?

One of the most helpful tools in reaching and sustaining a goal is by developing a positive and healthy routine. A routine helps us prioritize tasks and avoid distractions. It is a way to develop consistent behaviors and choices that later turn into long term habits. For example, having a set time and place to exercise in your routine will encourage commitment and sustainability.

Establishing a routine is critical for success but it is also important to set goals that are attainable. Think about ways to make minor adjustments or improvements in your routine to develop long lasting habits. It is a lot easier to sustain small changes in your routine that do not cause significant disruption and therefore increase the chances of sustainability. Over time, the small changes will compound into long term habits, leading to sustainability and positive results. When you see progress, it helps build confidence, perseverance, and motivation for continued growth.

In addition to setting attainable goals, it is also critical to make your goals measurable. This provides you with a tangible way to track your progress and see incremental improvements towards your ultimate goal. Motivation and perseverance often develop when you can visually see yourself getting closer to attaining your goal. It is also important to celebrate your progress and reward yourself for each milestone you meet.

Goals help to provide meaning to life and are a great way to challenge your talents, creativity, resources and opportunities. Set goals that are inspiring and help promote positive self-growth and confidence.
